The paper reviews the current status of the observations of cluster X-ray sources. Available evidence for the existence of hot gas in clusters is presented with particular reference to the detection of highly ionized iron emission features in the X-ray spectra of several clusters, since these observations may also constrain models for the origin of the plasma. Current ideas on the origin and heating of the intracluster gas are outlined. Finally, the possible role of cluster X-ray studies in furthering the understanding of the evolution of the universe is examined.
