Progress and problems in the creation of an X-ray laser are reviewed. The lack of suitable laser media, lack of known lasing frequencies, the enormous pump power required, and restriction of photoionization to the soft X-ray region are acknowledged as problems. Some promise in work with hot dense plasma and a solid target (triply ionized aluminum at 117.4 angstrom) is reported. Promising applications for X-ray lasers would include in vivo microscopy, holograms and structural analysis of nucleic acids and high-molecular-weight substances, studies of crystal dislocations. Equipment and conditions overlap with those encountered in laser-plasma research, and the high-temperature and high-pressure processes involved relate to studies of stellar interiors.
