Scientific paper

The evolution of the atmospheres of Mars, Venus, and the earth are compared. The abundances of CO2 gas and water vapor in the atmospheres of these planets are examined, noting the relationship between the atmospheric CO2 abundance and the surface liquid water content. Also, ground-based and Pioneer data on the D/H ratios in the atmospheres of Mars and Venus are compared with the D/H ratio in the earth's ocean. Consideration is given to the implications of the atmospheric conditions of these planets for studying the origins of life on earth.
