A method is described to determine the 'black-body radius' of neutron stars from a spectral analysis of the radiation observed in X-ray bursts. Taking into account the effect of gravitational redshift on the radiation leaving the surface of a neutron star, a relationship between the mass and radius for neutron stars can be derived. The two main problems in the interpretation of the X-ray burst observations are discussed: visibility of the whole surface of a neutron star in an X-ray burst; the validity of the assumption that the spectrum in the tail of X-ray bursts is given by a black-body.
