The theory of neutronization and lepton escape in the gravitational collapse of stars is examined, and the consequences of these processes for the hydrodynamics of collapse are considered. The adiabatic hydrodynamics of collapse is considered in the limit of strongly trapped neutrinos; the mass range for the dense (collapsed) remnant is predicted, and the character of the 'bounce' is discussed.
