This paper presents a defence of the arguments, and a revision of the numbers where the arguments cannot be justified, of an earlier (1978) conservative estimate for the number of habitable planets in the Galaxy. The revised estimate gives values of 5.3 million habitable planets (mean separation about 140 light years) and 2.4 million planets orbiting stars of sufficient age for intelligent life to have formed (mean separation about 180 light years). The present paper does not, however, make any contribution to the estimate of the probability of such life forming.
