To emphasize the importance of cosmic rays, it is pointed out that the energy density of the rays near the earth is roughly equivalent to the energy density of starlight, the galactic magnetic fields and the universal black body radiation. In the case of UH nuclei, it is hoped that a measurement of their abundances will elucidate the complicated nuclear processes which give rise to their synthesis in stellar interiors and provide information about their acceleration and propagation from the time they are formed to their arrival at earth many millions of years later.
