A review of conflicts in views and priorities concerning high-cost manned missions and unmanned missions in the past decade, and the present outlook of the Spacelab and Shuttle program is followed by an overview of astrophysics research and the contribution space technology can make to it. Problems brought to the fore by data on quasars, super-dense clusters, X-ray astronomy, black holes, and data relevant to problems of cosmological origins are discussed. Vast opportunities exist for space-program solar system studies, including earth weather as affected by solar parameters and the implications of the negative results of the search for solar neutrinos. The Viking mission in search of extraterrestrial life on Mars and projects geared to detection of extraterrestrial intelligence also open up prodigious vistas for research.
