Photoelectric observations of three planetaries in each of the Magellanic Clouds give evidence for (1) a 40 percent overabundance of helium in five of the six nebulae, (2) a deficiency of a factor of 10 in the abundance of oxygen in the nebulae in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and (3) ratios of N/O similar to those of galactic planetaries. Observations of five small H II regions in the SMC are consistent with the deficiency of a factor of 4 to 6 in the oxygen abundance and the low N/O ratio found by others in the more prominent H II regions. The overabundance of helium is unexpected from comparison with galactic planetaries. The oxygen abundance is at the low end of the range for galactic and extragalactic objects.
