The purpose of this investigation is to study possible nonequilibrium (Non LTE) conditions in multilayer gas flow similar to that encountered in outer planet probe entry. The question under consideration is - does the high intensity radiation from atomic and ionic sources in the shock-layer induce transparency in and penetrate the relatively cool gas of the ablative-layer near the body. To estimate the importance of this question an analytic solution has been obtained for a simple two layer model. The results of this solution allow one to estimate the difference between equilibrium and maximum nonequilibrium wall heating.
