Spectra of right- and left-hand circularly polarized components in 26 type IIIb solar radio bursts were obtained with an antenna consisting of two parallel crossed log-periodic units. Of the 200 elementary bursts recorded, 70% were polarized in the left-hand sense, 5% in the right-hand sense, and 25% were unpolarized. Reversals of the sense of polarization in any given burst were not observed. These results are discussed in terms of a model wherein the emission of type IIIb bursts is linearly or highly elliptically polarized and circular polarization is impressed on the radio waves while they propagate through the solar corona. It is suggested that experiments relating to the existence of a linearly polarized component in type IIIb bursts should be performed to determine whether the readability of such a component differs in any way from that of the linear component in type III bursts.
