E-region minimum virtual height data obtained from a network of ionosonde stations situated at an average latitudinal position of 51 N during the six-month period October 1970-March 1971 reveal the existence of long-period (10-15 days) planetary-scale fluctuations. The amplitude of the fluctuations is generally larger at stations north of 50 deg latitude. The long-period waves are moving westward at about 17 deg of longitude per day from October through December 1970, while no consistent pattern of movement is observed for January-March 1971. The longitudinal variations of the minimum virtual height at higher latitudes for Oct.-Dec. 1970, are consistent with a wave one type of variation and are in phase to within 45 deg of longitude with the variations of harmonic one of stratospheric radiance data at 30 mb. The lower latitude station data are generally negatively correlated with interpolated radiance data, suggesting high-low latitude planetary-scale coupling effects at E-region heights.
