The Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for magnetohydrodynamic discontinuities are extended to take account of the Hall effect and the model developed is applied to plasma processes in interplanetary space and the magnetosphere. The Rankine-Hugoniot conditions are formulated for collisional and also for rarefied plasmas on the basis of partial differential hydrodynamic equations. The relation of magnetohydrodynamic discontinuities to anisotropic rotational shock waves and to the formation of currents in the magnetosphere is examined.
