Determinations of the mass-to-light ratios (M/L) of binary galaxies are examined in some detail to investigate why the binary-galaxy method of M/L determination gives results smaller than those given by the rotation-curve and velocity-dispersion methods. Selection biases inherent to the binary-galaxy method are identified, and results are summarized for a recent attempt at determining the M/L ratios of 156 binary galaxy systems. These results are shown to be in rough agreement with other external measures of galactic masses and are considered as supporting the massive-halo hypothesis. Several qualitative effects of dynamical friction in binary galaxy systems whose components possess massive halos are discussed.
