The diffuse interstellar feature at 6284 A has been studied in the spectra of 42 early-type stars. The equivalent width is strongly correlated with E(B-V), but still shows much scatter: W equals (1.40 + or - 0.10) E (B-V) /A/ indicating that the reddening scale is correct. Substracting the error contributions of reddening and equivalent width, the remaining scatter of + or - 0.22 A turns out to be of cosmic origin.
