A collection of the existing data on the phase curves of asteroids allows an analytical representation of the opposition effect (defined as the surge in brightness at small phase angles with respect to the linear part of the phase relation) by means of a parabola and a fixing of its precise starting point. A study of the standard deviation of the observations indicates that, as a first approximation, this effect is independent of the albedo. As a consequence of these results, the phase coefficient can also be calculated from observations performed in the opposition effect range only; the accuracy of this determination is quite good for phase angles ranges larger than 3-4 deg.
