The first-order effects of a velocity field on the asymmetry of Fraunhofer lines are analyzed and a method for recovering the velocity gradient from the observed asymmetries is described. The method - which does not require the concept of formation depth - is applied to the inversion of synthetic data; the results obtained show that it has the properties of stability and sensitivity necessary for working in practice within a fairly large range of photospheric velocities (up to the order of the Doppler width of the lines).
