The possible contribution to type IV radio emission of all the low-frequency waves generated by energetic electrons and protons in a magnetic trap in the sun. Particular emphasis is placed on whistlers, since they make the main contribution to the radio emission through the coupling with Langmuir waves. Various manifestations of whistlers are distinguished on the basis of a consideration of whistler scattering by ions and electrons and the transformation of ion acoustic waves into whistlers.
