The onset of compressible MHD convective instability in the ideal MHD limit is studied to demonstrate the modification to the Schwarzschild criterion due to the presence of uniform vertical magnetic field. It is shown that the vertical magnetic field does have stabilizing effect in the sense that certain amount of superadiabaticity for the background temperature gradient can be tolerated. For equilibrium in which mass density increases with height, the system can be stable as long as the magnetic field strength is strong enough. The critical conditions for the onset MHD convective instability correspond to the limits of zero rate of change and infinite horizontal wavenumber.
