A new method is proposed to solve in the linear approximation the fourth-order gravitational equations which stem from Lagrangians of the form α = √-9(R + 1/2aR2 + bRμνRμν) - kα. Two kinds of linearized solutions obtained by this method are presented: (1) the metric of a static spherically symmetric body; (2) the metric of a straight infinitely thin cosmic string.
