The dimension of space is not a priori fixed in string theory, and raises a tree-level fine tuning problem analogous to the cosmological constant in Einstein gravity. Above the critical dimension, the theory admits exact homogeneous and isotropic vacuum solutions. The authors analyze the corresponding conformal theory. They comment on its interpretation as induced 2d gravity, which "explains" the origin of time.
