Phase-resolved spectroscopy of the novalike (UX UMA type) cataclysmic binary IX Vel is presented. The Balmer and He I emission-line profiles consist of a broad component from the accretion disk and an antiphased sharp component from the irradiated face of the late type secondary star. Using a geometric and kinematic model of the irradiation produced lines, the inclination of the system and the masses of the white dwarf and the late type star are derived. For the distance to IX Vel,(d = 95 + or - 12 pc) is obtained from the published ellipsoidal light variation in the K-band. The accretion rate and luminosity for this distance are given. The He II lambda 4686 line flux from the accretion disk is consistent with being produced by the He II continuum of the boundary layer.
