A light-induced drift (LID) effect in which gas mixtures are separated by white light was recently proposed to explain anomalous concentrations of various species in chemically peculiar stars. It is shown here that LID can also occur with only one optically active species in a buffer gas, when multilevel atoms are considered. This new effect might have additional astrophysical applications, especially for alkali-metal atoms where the hyperfine interaction splits the ground state by an amount on the order of a Doppler width of the transition.
