The dynamics of a steep onset in the conjugate auroral riometer absorption was investigated by comparing 161 sudden increases in auroral riometer absorption (i.e., the sudden absorption increase events) recorded over three years for two conjugate stations: Macquarie Island and College (Alaska), located in the southern and northern auroral zones, respectively. It was found that a steep onset in auroral absorption tends to be present at similar times in the conjugate locations (L-value = 5.3). Results of data analysis show that the absorption onset travels mainly westwards, with an average velocity of 2.7-4.5 km/sec, along the sourthern and northern auroral ovals. The cases of a complete conjugacy breakdown, detected during the southern winter solstice period, appear to be related to a seasonal change in the latitude of the conjugate point location.
