The relationship between selected auroral emission features and the relative atomic oxygen abundance in the auroral thermosphere is investigated using measurements at 7320 A (OII emission), 4278 A (N2/+/1N), 4861 A (H-beta), 6300 A (OI), and 8446 A (OI), carried out with a multichannel tilting filter photometer at Poker Flat (Alaska) and model results from an electron transport code. It is shown that changes in the ratio of I(8446)/I(4278) observed on September 25, 1987, a day with strong auroral activity, indicated an oxygen depletion of about 50 percent within the timescale of a few hours.
