Scientific paper

Observations of the outbursts of the X-ray nova identified with V404 Cyg, the recurrent nova V745 Scorpii, the classical novae Scorpii 1989 and Scuti 1989, and of Cygnus X-3 in the summer of 1989 are reviewed. The similarities in the spectra of the outbursts are pointed out. The significance of the observations for current theories of nova outbursts is addressed.
