Over the last few years, the existence of a mutual relationship between accreting supermassive black holes powering AGN and star formation in their host galaxies has become evident. Significant advances have been obtained in the last ten years thanks to the sizable number of XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys, complemented by multiwavelength follow-up programs. I will review some of the recent results on this topic mostly from the COSMOS and CDFS surveys. In particular I will discuss how the SFR and morphologies observed in (obscured) AGN host galaxies point toward a dichotomy in the formation mechanisms of low- and high-luminosity AGN.
