Methods for determining the diameter of the sun are compared, including calculations of the time of passage, angular and micrometric measurements, photographic methods, and calculations based on eclipses and occultations. Consideration is given to the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and the ways in which measurements are affected by atmospheric perturbations. Measurements of the amplitude and period of variations of the solar radius from 1809 to 1988 are examined. The differences between these measurements are discussed, emphasizing the need to standardize measurement techniques.
