The operation of the RIEP instrument onboard the Mars 5 space probe was analyzed to test the previously made hypothesis that the data on ion fluxes obtained by the instrument can be interpreted as detection of heavy ion fluxes in the region where the solar wind interacts with Mars. The analysis indicates that all the typical features of the experimental data can be explained if ions of only one mass are present in this region, and the hypothesis on the existence of heavy ion fluxes is not required for their explanation.
