Spectroscopic and photometric observations of GQ Mus (N Mus 1983) are presented. The results of the CCD photometry show conspicuous changes in the light curve's shape and amplitude. The optical emission-line spectrum has also modified its properties, indicating dramatic changes in the ionization of the nova shell. The current properties of the ionizing source and new physical conditions in the envelope are derived from a photoionization model of the nova ejecta. A central source temperature of 164000K and a luminosity of 350L_solar are found for an envelope mass of 5x10^-4 M_solar. These observations are compared with previous results and discussed in the context of the models proposed to explain the unique properties of this system.
