In order to improve remote sensing techniques for observations of the moon and planets, a study was made of optical absorption bands of iron and titanium in glasses of lunar composition. A number of glasses were made under reducing and oxidizing conditions with compositions varying over the entire range of lunar sample compositions. Reflectivity spectra were studied for glasses similar in composition to all major lunar rock types, and all were found to exhibit a visible window and strong, broad absorption bands at 0.42, 1.1, and 1.9 micrometers. The spectra closely match spectra of actual and synthetic lunar glasses but did not match the spectra of the dark glasses. An important result of this study was the confirmation of the predicted band positions of ligand-metal charge transfer bands of iron and titanium from molecular orbital theory.
