Previous theoretical calculations of chromospheric heating during solar flares are reviewed for the cases of impulsive heating (characterized by constant density) and long-term heating (characterized by constant pressure). These calculations are compared with data obtained by UV flare observations from the OSO-4 and OSO-6 satellites. It is found that the temperature dependence of the 'average' subflare emission measure at temperatures in excess of 100,000 K is in agreement with the predictions of the impulsive-heating model.
