The first detection of O III 5007-A forbidden line emission from the Io plasma torus is reported. Nine observations obtained with the Cassegrain Echelle Spectrograph attached to the 3.6 m telescope of the European Southern Observatory on 1993 March 3 indicated a mean intensity of 20(+/- 4) R centered on a region between 5.5 and 5.8 R(J) from Jupiter. The observed intensity is a factor of 3 higher than a previously reported upper limit, suggesting that time variability may be significant. The S II 6716/6731-A forbidden line ratio shortly before the forbidden O III observations was 0.68 at the point of maximum forbidden O III emission, suggesting an electron density of 2000-3000 e(-)/cu cm. A value of 0.16 for the S II 4069/6731-A forbidden line ratio was obtained from data taken the following night indicating an electron temperature of 2-3 eV. The mixing ratio of O(2+)/e(-) at the point of maximum emission is estimated to be 3.4 percent.
