The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope/Remote Observatory (AST/RO), a 1.5-m aperture telescope scheduled for installation at the South Pole in late 1992, will conduct heterodyne spectroscopy of galactic molecular clouds and molecular lines in the earth's stratosphere at wavelengths near 600 microns; with some modifications, AST/RO may serve as a general-purpose telescope for the mm, sub-mm, and far-IR ranges. All of the optics of AST/RO are offset for high beam efficiency as well as to avoid the creation of inadvertent reflections and resonances.
