The High Energy Transient Experiment (HETE) is a space project for the investigation of cosmic gamma ray bursts. Managed directly by a small team at MIT and constrained by tight schedules and budgets, HETE is also a full fledged international program, making use of advanced technologies. The project is described in general terms, and some of the aspects related to the international activities are discussed.
