It is argued that the Lynden-Bell-Mestel (1965) flattening instability will cause the perturbations of the Hubble flow from which galaxies and clusters of galaxies formed to collapse essentially one-dimensionally. One-dimensional numerical models are used to study the subsequent bounce under the assumption of isothermality. It is found that the conditions under which the bounce occurs depend very sensitively on the residual sound speed of the collapsing material and the initial configuration from which the collapse gets under way. These results suggest that a step-by-step approach to this important problem may be more promising than those two- and three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations which are feasible on existing computing machines.
