Spectrograms of the A0p Si star HR 5597 obtained with a reciprocal dispersion of 6.8 A/mm are analyzed to determine the magnetic field and radial velocity of the star. The values obtained are plotted against phase on a period close to Winzer's (1974) period of 2.89 days, and it is found that the radial velocities undergo a significant variation in synchronism with the light, but the effective magnetic field scatters randomly through a large range. The pattern of magnetic-field variation is shown to be quite unlike that observed in any other magnetic star, with the magnetic field appearing to be roughly constant near +2.3 kG through 0.7 of the cycle and then dipping briefly to +1.2 kG. It is suggested that the major part of these magnetic variations is due to intrinsic changes in the stellar magnetic field and may possibly result from realignment of the field lines due to horizontal mass motions in the outer layers of the star without a net change of flux through the visible hemisphere.
