The interstellar reddenings of luminous stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud are studied using the catalog of Azzopardi and Vigneau (1975) and intrinsic colors by Isserstedt (1977). The discrepancy between the observable frequency function of interstellar functions and the unknown true distribution function of absorptions (roughly estimated from galaxy counts) is attributed to selection effects which reduce the detection probability of strongly reddened stars. The functions mentioned above are evaluated, along with an error-free function and the resulting distribution functions. The distribution of stars according to their redness, and the influence of photometric errors on the distribution functions, are shown. It is suggested that selection effects have often led to the underestimation of the dust content of external galaxies determined by the reddenings of bright members.
