The spherical harmonic coefficients of the solar magnetic field are used to divide the observed field into 'normal modes', the independent solutions of the turbulent solar dynamo. The modes S 1 and S 3, which are symmetric with respect to the equator and have two and six magnetic sectors, respectively, were dominant during 1973. It is suggested that these two modes essentially controlled the position of the three most conspicuous coronal holes observed during the Skylab period.
