The contribution of Ly-alpha emission from the interstellar medium (IME) to the geocoronal Ly-alpha emission near local midnight is investigated using measurements of geocoronal-emission absorption by a hydrogen cell aboard the D2 A Tournesol satellite. The line profile of the observed emission is deduced from intensity measurements, geocoronal and hydrogen-cell absorption of the IME is analyzed, and the polarization of the IME is computed. The effect of solar gravity on IME line profiles is considered, and the apparent temperature of the interstellar medium is deduced. The results indicate that the IME is not absorbed in directions corresponding to angles of 120 to 200 and 300 to 60 deg from the ecliptic, that the IME line profile has two main minima at angles of 90 and 270 deg from the ecliptic, and that the intensity of the IME at angles of 160 and 60 deg from the ecliptic is 780 R and 430 R, respectively. It is concluded that the IME is anisotropic and that its maximum volume emission rate arises at a distance of a few AU from some unspecified location.
