Recent analysis of observations (by the Halley Multicolor Camera) of the dust distribution near the nucleus of the Halley comet revealed the occurrence of particle fragmentation close to the comet's nucleus. The hydrodynamic implications of this strong fragmentation are discussed. A sublimation process is suggested in which only part of the gas comes directly from the surface, while a major fraction is liberated during the fragmentation of dust particles (distributed source) with which the initial gas flow from the surface is strongly loaded and which carries large amounts of volatile material (ice). Internal gas (water vapor) pressure may be the main cause for particle break-up. It is suggested that the divergence of the gas (and dust) flow could be responsible for providing the generally observed isotropic gas distribution.
