Composite spectra have been obtained from optical data for two samples, one of radio-loud and one of radio-quiet quasars. The shape of the continuum, and the characteristics of the emission lines have been derived. The appearance of an average QSO spectrum at different redshifts has been also analyzed. On the basis of this information, the issues of the physical conditions in the line emitting region of quasars, the multicolor selection techniques, and the K-corrections of the QSO observed magnitudes are addressed.
