CO (J = 2 - 1) mapping is presented of M2-9, the Butterfly nebula, with high angular resolution. The profile observed towards the nucleus of the nebula exhibits two peaks at LSR velocities of 76 and 85 km/s. Although the CO envelope is essentially unresolved, the observations are well explained by assuming that the molecular gas is distributed in a ring of diameter 10 arcsec or less, whose kinematical age is less than 3500 yr (for a distance of 1 kpc). The mass of the molecular gas in M2-9 is greater than 0.001 solar mass, i.e., comparable to the mass of the ionized gas in nebula.
