Einstein's method of investigating electromagnetic phenomena, the difference between his method and that of Lorentz, and Einstein's attitude toward the conventional method of Poincare are reviewed. The role of experiments in Einstein's investigations is discussed, and it is shown how his understanding of the nature as an integral whole led to the formulation and interpretation of the theory of relativity and its consequences. Einstein departed from the classical method of accumulation of hypotheses and emphasized the relational status of all parameters, including space and time, with the consequence that space and time lost their status of substantiality and absoluteness.
