It is suggested that Mercury may provide unique opportunities for learning about electromagnetic interactions and the origin of the solar system. Basic knowledge of the planet and findings obtained from the Mariner 10 mission are reviewed. Discovery of Mercury's intrinsic magnetic field is noted and hypotheses are presented to account for the large discrepancy between the iron abundance indicated by Mercury's high density and that predicted by the chemical models. Topography and tectonics of the planet are discussed, and the geological question of the origin of Mercury's plains is raised. Finally, a sketch of Mercury's geologic history based on analysis of Mariner 10's data is presented.
