Data on the scientific results obtained during the first 120 days of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter mission are presented. Details of the composition and structure of the upper and lower atmosphere as well as of clouds, winds, net radioactive fluxes, solar-wind-ionosheath-atmosphere interactions and topographic information are given, noting that radio signals showed that atmospheric turbulence was not responsible for scintillations. The Orbiter magnetometer (OMAG), located on the nightside of Venus, indicated occasionally strong but variable magnetic fields around the planet. The upper limit of Venus' magnetic moment was reported to be less than 10 to the 22nd g/cu cm. A radar-bright feature, called Maxwell, possibly of tectonic or of complex volcanic origin, was observed by the Orbiter radar (ORAD) and similar radar-bright features, called Gauss and Hertz, were theorized to be of volcanic origin. Direct measurements indicate that apparent motions of 100 m/sec, observed by remote sensing, were winds and not wave motions.
