Results from NASA's Pioneer Venus space mission are presented and studied. Pioneer radar equipment has uncovered the profile of a large rift extending east-west 1,400 km and exhibiting up to 7 km of relief between its floor and the surrounding hills. In addition, an area known as Maxwell seems to be 8 km higher than the adjacent Great Northern Plateau, which itself is 3-5 km higher than the surrounding region. Data on the atmosphere of Venus are compared to Soviet Venera findings. The four distinct cloud layers, which probably consist of sulfuric acid droplets and pure sulfur grains, in addition to discrepancies in argon sampling, are discussed. Controversy concerning the sulfur cycle changeover and where or if it occurs, is studied, noting that the probe's mass spectrometer sampling intakes were clogged for part of the descent. Theories concerning cloud circulation and how it affects the appearance of Venus are covered. In addition, the Pioneer Orbiter has confirmed the Soviet observation of whistlers in the Venus atmosphere.
