We develop a quantitative model of N_2 on early Mars. We consider lightning and entry shock formation of nitrates. Laboratory simulations of shock chemistry were performed in gases of varying mixtures of N_2 and CO_2. By transforming N_2 to a condensed form (nitrate) this process may have been important in preserving nitrogen against impact removal on early Mars.
