High-spatial-resolution spectroscopic scans of the nuclear region of M87 obtained over the period from 1972 to 1978 are reported. Composite spectra of the galaxy's core are examined, and the core is shown to exhibit a number of strong broad emission lines similar to those observed in a type 2 Seyfert galaxy. Approximate line strengths for the various emission lines are given, a small-slit nuclear spectrum is studied, and a reddening of E(B - V) = 0.15 + or - 0.11 is estimated. It is found that the gas velocity dispersion increases rapidly toward the center of the galaxy, reaching a FWHM of 1000 km/s for the smallest aperture (r = 75 pc). A central electron density of approximately 1100 per cu cm is derived from the forbidden S II doublet at 6716, 6730 A.
