Columbus's discovery that a vast, unknown landmass lay between Europe
and Asia vividly demonstrated that ancient knowledge of the world was
woefully incomplete. The geographic revolution that followed paved the
way for unorthodox astronomical ideas, including the sun-centered
cosmology of Copernicus.
